Evening Standard 3/9/11/01 Nicholas de Jong
This multi-million-pound musical inflates Napoleon's love for his first
wife Josephine into one of the greatest romances never before told
in song and dance. Timothy Williams's sumptuous orchestral music affords
more climaxes than a multiple orgasm. Francesca Zambello's production
is shot through with spectacular images of war and peace- from Notre
Dame Cathedral to the Tuilleries Palace. Paul Baker's Napoleon and
Anastasia Barzee's demure Josephine are adequate, but it's Nigel Richards,
thrilling as Napoleon's outlawed brother, who rightly seizes the singing
honours.
Evening Standard Nicholas de Jong
....David Burt's suave, sinister Tallyrand remains a constantly intriguing
presence and Nigel Richards, in superlative, impassioned voice, as
Bonaparte's rebellious brother, introduces real notes of pathos....
