The Manchester
Evening News Alan Hulme Oh boy, oh Baby,
what a delivery. This ante-natal knees up is the happiest event of
the season; an adult, literate, bouncing bundle of joy. It’s a zany, oddball musical from mid-eighties’ Broadway
that looks at three very different couples on a college campus somewhere
in small-town America. Lizzie (the magnificent Caroline O’Connor) and Danny (Nigel
Richards) are students… Pam (Susie Blake) and Nick (Tim Flavin)
want a baby… Arlene (Dilys Whatling) and Alan (David McAlister)
have just waved goodbye to the last of their grown-up daughters… All
six principals are perfectly cast. These are ideal performances from
professionals at the top of their craft. Baby won best
musical production at the Manchester Evening News Drama Awards. “The bonny, bouncing winner is Baby, the Wythenshawe Forum’s
European premiere of the Broadway show about being pregnant. Brilliant
cast – truly superb, razor-sharp staging. Congratulations to
director Roger Haines. The Stage Bill
McCoid Nice tunes, neat
performances… Baby is sugar coated and light in texture… It’s ultimately
the delivery which gives us a bouncing baby. Caroline O’Connor…makes
maximum impact playing Lizzie Fields, girlfriend to Danny Hooper, played
with sweet gusto by Nigel Richards.
